HISTORY OF THE WASHINGTON PARK NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
Founded by residents in 1975, the Washington Park Neighborhood Association was established to preserve the residential character of the neighborhood. The association continues to help develop a strong sense of community among residents, bringing neighbors together to work on projects such as maintaining the park; zoning, housing, traffic and safety issues. The neighborhood association has sponsored several house tours and a highly successful garden tour to fund various projects for the neighborhood. The WPNA also sponsors social events, such as picnics and contra dancing throughout the year. Washington Park was the first neighborhood in Winston-Salem to formulate a long-term guide for development. Working with staff from the City/County Planning Board, a dedicated group of association volunteers created a plan outlining possibilities for the neighborhood. Adopted by the City/County Planning Board and the Board of Aldermen as part of the city ordinance in 1977, it has been updated once since its conception and was again approved by city officials.
Membership in the association is open to any resident in the Washington Park neighborhood (see map). A resident may join by paying modest annual membership dues. Neighborhood residents are notified of meetings and other events by notices on the bulletin board at the corner of Cascade Avenue and Park Boulevard and through the Washington Park Neighborhood Association newsletter.
