Neighbors-To-Neighbors
- by Rachel Wilson
“Thank you for the delicious food. It was special and it touched my heart as well as my stomach. At 83 years old I am thankful for my neighbors.”
Imagine the delight of 17 seniors across the neighborhood as Neighbors to Neighbors volunteers delivered home cooked meals to their homes.
Recently a group of volunteers met at Sociale Gourmet and worked together to prepare more than thirty main dishes. We then paired them with frozen pre-made side dishes and delivered them to some of our senior neighbors. The recipients could either cook them right away or freeze them for a no-cook meal later. Lots of the recipients told us they were tired of the typical frozen food they normally eat and were thrilled to have some home-cooked meals.
A big thanks to Sociale Gourmet who made the meal preparation so easy (and best of all- no clean up)! They were very generous and gave Washington Park a big discount because they thought our plan for the food was a noble cause.
Another fun part of the night was delivering the meals to our senior neighbors. In addition to lots of warm thanks, some of the recipients also shared stories and photos with the volunteers and relished a chance to visit with neighbors.
Since this event was such a success, Neighbors to Neighbors plans to do this again later this year. In the meantime, if you would like to adopt a senior please let us know. We are starting to develop a program that would pair neighbors from different generations. rachelwilson@triad.rr.com, 722-1341
